Not going to take much time on posts since we're still alive in the QF today, but here's an interesting hand to declare. You are in 4S:
Tx QJxxx QJxxx x
AKQJxx Kxx A Kxx
You are in 4S and your diabolical LHO, Justin Lall, leads a trump. At the other table, no trump lead and it makes. How do you play to try to avoid losing 12 imps?
One possible line on this hand is SJ; DA; ST; DQ intending to throw a club if not covered. Obviously, if Justin has something like xx Axxx Kxxx Jxx, this will end pretty badly :)
Very nice showing so far. Good luck the rest of the way.
This is how I played, which is close to best. What is cute, it turns out very slightly better to fail to notice the ST is an entry! Pull trumps, HK, H to dummy, run DQ, etc., always making if HA on left or CA on right, without risking a ruff as the 1st line does. ST is the ultimate red herring.
In real life, lose 12 imps on either of these lines but your team survives.
In "real life" I'm an associate professor in economics at the Kellogg school (Northwestern), specializing in game theory. In my other life, I spend way too much time with bridge hands swirling in my brain -- maybe this outlet will help cure my condition! I hope you enjoy.

Wow, cute line, indeed. Good luck in the semis. You can do it.
Cheers,
Alex
